Statement from the Lebanese Ministry of Health:

The Ministry of Public Health condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the barbaric crime committed by the Israeli enemy in burning down the Mays al-Jabal Governmental Hospital—an act constituting a flagrant and brutal assault. This public healthcare facility—which the Ministry had diligently refurbished and equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology to serve as a lifeline and a safe haven for displaced residents and those steadfastly remaining in border areas—is now facing systematic destruction that reveals a profound moral bankruptcy and deep-seated criminality. The occupation forces did not merely occupy the facility previously and convert it into a military barracks; they have now gone so far as to burn it down completely, thereby depriving the people of the South of their most basic human rights to medical treatment and healthcare.

The Ministry asserts that targeting medical institutions and healthcare personnel constitutes a full-fledged war crime and a blatant violation of international conventions. It calls upon the international community, the World Health Organization, and the International Committee of the Red Cross to immediately break their suspicious silence and hold the occupation accountable for its repeated crimes against Lebanon’s health sector. Furthermore, the Ministry emphasizes that these criminal acts will not break the people's resolve; the Ministry remains committed to fulfilling its national and humanitarian duty and supporting the people of the South with all available resources, regardless of the sacrifices required.

Event Notes

Systematic attack on the Lebanese health workers and health care building

During the brief period from March 2 to April 14, 2026, alone, the World Health Organization has verified the killing of 88 health workers in Lebanon in Israeli attacks. This weaponization of health care, in violation of international humanitarian law, is systematic with attacks on hospitals, ambulances, and health workers becoming a habitual feature of contemporary warfare. However, Israel has presented these attacks as compatible with international law, under the pretext that enemy combatants were embedded within medical facilities, a narrative designed to manufacture public consent for destroying health care systems.

On March 13, 2026, amid Israeli preparations for a ground invasion of southern Lebanon, an airstrike killed two paramedics at a health facility in Al Sowana (Marjayoun District). That same night, Israeli bombardments destroyed the primary health care center in Burj Qalawiya (Bint Jbeil District), one of the few still operating in the area. Nearly all staff present in the center (12 doctors, paramedics, and nurses) were killed in the strikes.

On March 14, 2026, an official statement by the Israeli army spokesperson declared that Israel “will act in accordance with international law against Hezbollah’s military activity using these facilities and ambulances,” although independent investigations have consistently refuted claims about Hezbollah using health care infrastructure for military purposes

On the weekend of March 28-29, 10 health workers were killed in a 24-hour period by Israeli attacks on Lebanon, according to the Lebanese government and the World Health Organization. Lebanon's current minister of public health, Rakan Nassereddine, said he has initiated the process of filing a complaint to the U.N. Security Council.

At the end of the month of May 2026, WHO statements provide casualty totals:

• 51 healthcare personnel killed by 28 March 2026. • 91 healthcare workers killed by mid-April 2026. • 116 deaths from 169 confirmed attacks on healthcare by 20 May 2026. • 128 deaths from 191 confirmed attacks according to a later WHO update.

On June 3, 2026, alone, 4 Paramedics were targeted and killed and several others were injured in double taps or drone strikes.
