Palestinian journalists who covered Israel's attack on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank last week say they were fired upon by Israeli soldiers. A video which is published by the TV channel Al Araby and which is shared by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz will show the incident. The video shows an Israeli military vehicle entering a street where a group of journalists have taken up positions. Al-Jazeera reported the incident on Monday July 3 and pointed to another video from Al Araby. According to a Russia Today journalist, who was also on the scene, wearing bulletproof vests clearly marked PRESS, and one of the TV cameras captures the incident where fire is opened from the Israeli military vehicle. The video shows how one of the Al Arabiya journalists' television cameras, standing on a tripod, appears as the target of a sniper inside the Israeli vehicle and is hit and smashed by a series of shots. Journalist Ameed Shehadeh and photographer Rabie al-Munir fled into a Palestinian house and escaped unharmed from the incident.
" They saw us, and the whole purpose was to prevent us from broadcasting from inside the camp, says Munir Haaretz."
According to him, the camera was hit by 20 shots.
The Israeli Center for the Protection of Media (I'lam) will now pursue the case and demand a full investigation into the incident. The Israeli army says in an announcement that they were fired upon by armed men in the camp and that they returned fire : "The circumstances in which the camera was destroyed are absolutely clear, it says".
Twelve Palestinians were killed and over 100 injured, including several civilians and children, when Israel carried out its largest attack, which it called an anti-terrorist operation, against an area in the occupied West Bank.
