Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital in Gaza Converted into Israeli military barracks by IDF

"Scenes from a video posted yesterday by the Israeli soldier Natanel Zedek in front of the emergency department and blood bank inside the Turkish Palestinian Friendship Hospital, which has been occupied by the Israeli occupation forces and turned into an Israeli military barracks. Converting a hospital for non-medical purposes is considered a violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime under several provisions: 1. Article 19 of the First and Second Geneva Conventions, which stipulates the protection of hospitals and prohibits their use for any military purpose. 2. Article 18 of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits the use of medical facilities for purposes that are incompatible with their medical missions. 3. International criminal law, especially regarding the International Criminal Court, considers this conversion a war crime if the hospital is used to directly support military operations. These provisions aim to ensure the continuity of medical services during conflicts and to protect individuals who are in dire need of medical care. October 2023 – Following Israel's blockade of Gaza, the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, Gaza's only cancer hospital, is forced to shut down after running out of fuel. October 30, 2023 – Hospital director Dr. Subhi Skaik reports that the hospital's third floor was struck in an Israeli airstrike. Israeli war jets struck the medical facility at least twice, leaving patients in a "state of panic". The strikes caused extensive damage to the hospital, director general, Dr. Subhi Skaik said. A fire also broke out on one of the hospital’s floors, before being contained. Turkey condemns the strike as a violation of international law. 2024 – Israeli forces occupy the hospital and use it as a military base, drawing condemnation from the Turkish government. March 2025 – During a renewed Israeli offensive in Gaza, the hospital is demolished in a controlled explosion by the IDF's 252nd Division. Israel states, without publicly providing evidence, that the building was no longer functioning as a hospital and was being used by Hamas operatives. March 2025 – Turkey condemns the destruction, calling it part of a policy to make Gaza uninhabitable and forcibly displace Palestinians. March 2025 – The IDF announces an internal probe into the demolition, following reports that it may have been carried out without the required approval.
