On December 27, the body of a child, Atta Mamoun Atta Mai, from Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, was recovered by civil defense crews after he fell into a deep water well near the Al-Sudaniya junction along Al-Rashid Street, northwest of Gaza City. The child was found dead after more than six hours of continuous search operations, as rescue teams worked under severe weather conditions and limited resources, attempting to reach the well and retrieve him.
Despite repeated efforts by civil defense crews, Atta did not survive.
Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal statement:
Ata fell into a water-filled pit while playing, mistaking it for a safe area. Rescue teams worked six hours to recover his body. Ata was living with relatives after his mother was killed, and his father is receiving medical treatment in Egypt. Basal warned that many wells in Gaza, especially on city outskirts, pose similar dangers. He noted that limited resources and the Israeli blockade on relief and shelter materials make prevention difficult. The Civil Defense renewed calls for international support to provide aid, shelter, and equipment to prevent further tragedies.
